What is Die Casting?

Die casting is a manufacturing process whereby molten metal is injected into a mold under high pressure. Most die casting is done in aluminum and zinc, with smaller, but growing, industries in magnesium, copper and other metals. Die cast molds are usually made of steel and consist of two halves with a cavity in between (see the diagram). A die cast machine injects the metal into the cavity, and, after the part has cooled, the two halves of the mold open and the part is ejected. Cycle times are measured in seconds.
